Open Access Colonoscopy Program: First Steps

Houston Gastro Institute's open-access colonoscopy program makes your screening simple, effective, and convenient. Patients aged 45 and older at average risk for colon cancer can schedule their screening without a prior office visit, saving time and hassle.

To schedule, complete a short form to select your preferred date and time. Our team will reach out to confirm details and ensure this program meets your needs. If suitable, we'll schedule your screening within 72 days of contact.

Next Steps

Once scheduled, we'll call to provide details on your procedure, answer questions, and give preparation instructions to ensure the best results. You'll also receive a prescription for your bowel preparation kit to be ready for your screening.

What Happens During an Open Access Screening Colonoscopy?

A screening entails visually examining your colon. Our specialists check for cancer, cancerous and noncancerous tumors, infection, inflammation, and bleeding. When you arrive for your screening, you’ll meet and greet your doctor performing the procedure. They’ll review details and information with you once more before proceeding. After the screening, your doctor will present the results, and then you can leave the office. The doctor will continue to provide follow-up results and recommendations to your referring physician as needed.

Is an Open Access Screening Colonoscopy Right for You?

If you need a colon screening but are unsure what kind you want to receive, our open access program may be right. The only way to find out is by filling out the initial form, letting us know of a date and time that will work for a consultation, and discussing your health needs with our experts. We’ll discuss details, your needs, and your preferences during your consultation, determining whether our open access program is the right choice for you. If we determine that there are more suitable options for you, that is entirely okay. We’ll provide additional assistance, resources, and recommendations for you to find the best colon screening for your needs.

Please note: If you want to proceed with our program but experience the following conditions or symptoms, you may need to schedule an office visit before being approved for screening.

  • You have major illnesses such as cardiac disease, respiratory issues, kidney issues, or severe diabetes.
  • You have significant abdominal pain, abrupt changes in bowel habits, and other gastrointestinal issues.

Patients may not qualify for open access if they are more than 75 years old or have additional GI symptoms, including rectal bleeding, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.
